Read Crochet Patterns Basics: Abbreviations – English Words Used in Crochet Patterns

Most crochet patterns contain some abbreviations that are just a short form of a word that is used commonly in English, even without a reference to crochet. Example: "tog" means "together".

Here is a list of the more common English abbreviations. In the examples, I'll use SC, which means the Single Crochet stitch, and Ch, which means the Chain stitch.

" inch or inches Continue in pattern until work measures 4" from beg.
alt alternate Increase at beginning of 2nd and every alt row.
approx approximately Work should be approx 6" wide.
beg begin or beginning Continue in pattern until work measures 4" from beg.
bet between Place marker bet 5th and 6th st
cm centimeter or centimeters Continue in pattern until work measures 4 cm from beg.
cont continue Cont in pattern for 4 more rows.
foll following or follow or follows Foll established pattern for 4 more rows.
g or gr gram (The pattern requires) 28 g baby yarn.
grp or grps group or groups
in or ins inch or inches Cont until work measures 4 ins from beg
incl including or inclusive
m meter or meters Length of scarf: 2 m
mm millimeter or millimeters) (use) 5 mm needles, or size required to meet gauge
no or num number (use) No. 10 needles, or size required to meet gauge
oz ounce or ounces (this project needs) 4 oz worsted weight yarn
prev previous Complete this section to match prev section.
rem remaining or remainder SC until 6 sts rem.
rep repeat or repeats *SC in next st. Ch 1. Rep from * to end of row.
tog together SC 2 tog
yd(s) yard(s) Scarf is 2 yds long
